Turkish author Orhan Pamuk, in a recent interview with German magazine Der Spiegel, complained about the lack of support shown to him by Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Said Pamuk, "During a period when I was experiencing big problems, Erdogan was not by my side."

When the magazine's reported replied "However he said he was sorry that there had been a case opened up against you, " Pamuk responded "Yes, but only because the incident had grown to international proportions. He wants to see Turkey in the EU, and don't forget that even Erdogan was thrown into prison some time ago for a few lines of poetry that he had read."
Pamuk mentioned during the Der Spiegel interview how proud he was to be Turkish, saying "Of course I am proud to be Turkish, proud that I write in Turkish, and proud that my work is translated into 40 different languages. But I don't want to over dramatize this."
