Leader of the main opposition Republican People's (CHP) Party, Deniz Baykal, has said that 2006 must be an election year. Pointing to what he says is a previously unparalleled level of tension in Turkish society, Baykal commented on a trip to Izmir that the ruling Justice and Development (AKP) Party had begun to put some of the basic balances of the Republic at risk, and that for this reason, an early election was necessary.

Said Baykal, "In November, the CHP will hold a general assembly. Then we will work to start movement on the elections. Because 2006 must be an election year."
