Leader of the main opposition Republican People's (CHP) Party, Deniz Baykal, has accused Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan of "thinking he is a Middle Eastern sheik."

Speaking about some of the latest developments involving rapid moves to privatize certain areas of industry by the Turkish government, Baykal used the strongest terms to criticize PM Erdogan and his administration: "Istanbul has fallen under mafia control. It is impossible to count on the supremacy of justice or law in this city nowadays. This prime minister sees the way this is going, and has begun to think of himself as one of the sheiks of the Middle East."  Baykal continued his message to Erdogan: "You are not a Middle Eastern sheik. You were voted in, and will be voted out. After you are voted out, you will have to explain your actions at the Turkish High Court. There is only one Istanbul in the world. Could the Sheik of Dubai go to the Mayor of Paris and say "Give me this parcel of land to build on"? The Prime Minister complains "We bring in Israels, we bring in Arabs, and you don't like any of them." We say, don't bring them in, remove yourself from this work. Open up the bidding, let Turks enter the bidding, as well as Israelis and Arabs....Stay far away from putting Turkey on the market."
