An official invitation to visit Washington, DC was issued to Northern Cyprus President Mehmet Ali Talat this morning by the Deputy Director of the US State Department's Southern European Affairs bureau, Douglas Silliman.

Following a one hour meeting, Talat and Silliman held a joint press conference, at which Silliman said that he had come specifically to bring the invitation to Talat from the State Department, and that the US viewed a visit by Talat to Washington, DC as a part of a solution to the ongoing Cyprus problems.
Talat for his part said that his upcoming trip to the US was "a very positive development." Talat also spoke about his hopes regarding the lifting of isolationary measures against the people and businesses of Northern Cyprus.
Vasiliu: If we don't change our tactics, there will be more of these visits
The Greek Cypriot authority reacted negatively to news of Talat's invitation, with former leader Yorgo Vasiliu warning Greek Cypriot leader Tasos Papadopoulos that further invitations would result from his not "embrace action on this subject."
