ISTANBUL - One hundred thousand books on agriculture will be handed out in 1,000 villages across Turkey as part of a joint project that aims to boost the agriculture industry during the financial downturn.

The effort is being carried out by DenizBank and the Istanbul Provincial Directorate of Agriculture.

According to Gökhan Sun, the director of DenizBank’s third European department, agriculture contributes considerably to Turkey’s economy.

"This project was established as a way to educate farmers in specific fields of agriculture, in order to lay the foundations for boosting the industry," Sun said, speaking at a press conference held at the Provincial Directorate on Tuesday.

    Experts

Expert agriculture consultants have been employed to hand out these books to farmers in different provinces and assist them as they go through the process of learning different agricultural techniques. "These consultants will ensure that the content of the books is understood and that techniques are adopted correctly by the farmers," Provincial Agriculture Director Ahmet Kavak said at the same press conference.

In addition, seminars will be held in the provinces where farmers can meet with experts and discuss and revise the content of the books. In seven low-income provinces, scholarships will also be provided for the children of farmers to undergo professional training in agriculture.

Equipment will also be handed out as a part of the project, whereby farmers who spend 100 Turkish Liras or more at specified petrol stations will be entered into a drawing where they can win one of eight tractors, 80 fuel checks, 80 units of ceramic equipment and 80 mobile phones.

By the end of this year, DenizBank aims to have 215 branches across Turkey that offer help and supplies for the country’s agriculture industry.
