Turkey is now entering an era during in which it will have to overcome one of its most difficult obstacles regarding the European Union accession process. As it tries to smooth its path into the EU, Ankara has presented a proposal to Kofi Annan of the United Nations, which states that Greek Cypriot ships will be for the first time in 31 years allowed to enter Turkish ports. It is expected that the public will be informed of the proposal on Tuesday. Officials highlight that the proposal, which contains reciprocal concessions, is not one-sided. Foreign Affairs has not confirmed the proposal as of yet.

Permanent Representative at the United Nations, Embassador Baki Ilkin visited the UN’s General Secretary, Kofi Annan at his residence and presented him with a written proposal to lift Ankara’s embargo, in effect since the UN Peace Operation in 1975.

General Secretary Annan informed Embassador Ilkin that he would look into the issue with his political advisers and would declare their position on the matter subsequently.
