Turkey's Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) said it is ready to support efforts to curb the authority of the country's constitutional court. (UPDATED)

The court intervened in the authority of parliament with its ruling to annul constitutional amendments to lift the headscarf ban in universities, the party's leader said in a written statement on Thursday.

"Democratic rule of law and parliamentary democracy have been wounded, and the dress-code problem at universities, which is a matter causing an uneasiness in society, has been drawn into a deadlock," the statement said.

The statement came a day after the Turkish Constitutional Court announced its reasoned decision regarding the case.

Lifting the headscarf ban harms the secularism principle and makes the basic principles of the republic "nonfunctional", the court said in its reasoned decision published in Turkey’s Official Gazette Wednesday.

Turkey's top court cancelled in June a government-sponsored constitutional amendment lifting a ban on wearing headscarves at universities.
