Former Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz, the first prime minister to be tried before the Supreme Court accused of privatizing Turkbank to establish media control for political gains appeared at a hearing yesterday in his defense along side former State Minister Gunes Taner. In his defense Yilmaz said, "The sale of a public entity reaching 600 million dollars would interest every prime minister in Turkey, because of the sheer economic size of the transaction. That is why I closely followed this issue."Yilmaz explained that everything Korkmaz Yigit had said to him was revealed later not to be correct. The former PM added that intelligence notes came from the security officials when the Turkbank privatization process started in May 1998. Yilmaz stated that in these notes, it was reported that a person who was a leader of organized crime in Turkey had made phone calls to put pressure on the outcome of the tender in Korkmaz Yigit's favor. Meanwhile, Former State Minister Gunes Taner said to the Supreme Court judges, "I wish I could meet you at a cocktail and talk about the problems of our country in such an environment. But I do not feel ashamed. None of these claims are true." The Supreme Court adjourned the case until March 24 and summoned 8 people as witnesses.
