In the Arab world, reaction to a potential EU membership for largely Muslim Turkey has been varied, with many experts noting that it could have a harmonizing effect on the relations between Europe and the Middle East. A brief review of some experts' words on a Turkish-EU membership is as follows: Fares Bireyzad (Jordan University): The start of accession talks with Turkey will have a "heartening" effect on us. Arabs think that an EU member Turkey will be able to better defend the interests of Muslims in the Middle East. A strong Turkey would give inspiration to Arabs on the subjects of modernization and democracy.  Abdulhamid el Ansari (Qatar's Doha University): It would be advantageous both for the EU and for Turkey if a Muslim country were to enter a Christian club. A label would be lifted from the EU, and in the process, all the policies which are being argued about in Turkey would be rationalized. The liberal hand against radical politics in other Islamic countries would be strengthened.  Elias Murad (General editor of Syria's El Baas newspaper): It would be very important to Syria to have an EU member border neighbor. In this way our political and economic relations with Europe would develop.
