The 41 children at the center of the shocking abuse videos to emerge from the orphanage in Malatya last week were brought to Istanbul yesterday by airplane. When asked by reporters where they were going, as they boarded the plane in Malatya, some of the children responded "To celebrate Independence Day." October 29 is Turkey's official Independence Day.

Escorted through Ataturk Airport and into waiting minibuses, the children from the Malatya orphanage were then transferred to Istanbul's Semiha Sakir Nursery, where they will undergo psychological rehabilitation for the next 2-3 months. According to authorities at the Social Services Foundation, the children's orphanage in Malatya will, over the next few months, be remodeled into a more modern facility, properly equipped to handle large groups of children. Following their stay in Istanbul, the 41 children will then be transferred back to Malatya.
