Cemal Kavak, president of the Istanbul faction of the Kurdish backed DEHAP Party, has announced the cancellation of a congress it was to hold in Istanbul on October 2, saying it didn't want to create a foundation for provocation or disturbances in the shadow of the EU accession talks scheduled to start on Monday. Kavak also noted that instead, he and others would be attending a "Yes to the EU" meeting, also scheduled for October 2, in Diyarbakir, a largely Kurdish city. Said Kavak, "Recent events and statements from government authorities could combine with a congress to create an unwanted foundation for provocation. For this reason, we have decided to cancel the congress."
