TURKEY, February 15 - Republican People's Party (CHP) Group Deputy Chairman Haluk Koc demanded the Insurance Fund for Savings Deposits (TMSF) sell 17 television channels, 10 radio channels, 1 daily and 6 magazines it owns, in an attempt de-monopolize the Turkish media . Koc said, "In the hands of governments of democratic countries, such a media power cannot exist."
Koc said that TMSF has a big media power in its hand and these organizations are manipulated by government partisans. He maintained that looting at the Justice and Development Party (AKP) cabinet had not been stamped out but only their direction changed. Expressing the following opinions about the issue of "Monopolized Media Giant TMSF" at a press meeting in parliament yesterday Koc said:
1) One year has passed since TMSF confiscated Star Group. TMSF has become a media giant composed of 17 television channels, 19 radio channels, 1 daily and 6 magazines. It was promised that the sale of them would be realized no later than September 2004.
2) TMSF terminated the contracts of 438 employees and recruited 321 people who are close to its world.
3) Adem Gurses, who was brought to the Media Group Presidency, has been paid 275 billion TL (25 billion TL per month) in total for the period he worked.
