Başaran previously published "The Laz Jokes," referring to people living in the eastern Black Sea region, in both languages, and Turkish and French books on Nasreddin Hodja and Bektashi jokes and Turkish tales.
Speaking to the Anatolia news agency, Başaran complained about the lack of resources about Turkish culture. "The data about this culture is not known by great circles. It causes the interaction between the two cultures to disappear and negatively affects mutual relations. I have worked for the success of Turkish children living in France in schools for many years. In my opinion, the main problem was the cultural lag and an identity crisis. I have started to compile these tales to remove this lag."
Başaran, who is known in France for his research and books on Turkish culture, especially oral culture, works in cooperation with the French Education Ministry and teaches Turkish classes in high schools. He also worked for years toward helping immigrants adapt.
