Turkey to strengthen missile defense

Turkey will produce missile defense shields in a bid to strengthen the country's defense capacity against ballistic missiles. The issue was discussed by the Defense Industry Executive Committee under the presidency of Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan in a five-hour meeting on Friday held at the Defense Ministry. Turkish Minister of Defense Vecdi Gonul said that feasibility studies for the defense system will be conducted first and domestic contribution will be dominant. Defense Industry Undersecretary Murat Bayar said that credit to finance the high-altitude system will be clarified soon.

Eight new projects to be started by Bayar have been authorized by the Ministry and a further 10 contractors will be approached, Gonul said, adding that contract negotiations had been completed.

These projects will cost $250 million and some of the main contractor companies include, TAI for C-130 Modernization Project, Havelsan for Electronic war, test and education center project, Milsoft and Vestel for electronic war simulation support center and training systems projects, and Yonca-Onuk for rapid intervention guarding boats project
