Iraq votes today on a historic referendum that will shape the future of the country. Over 15 million Iraqis are registered to cast their votes on the new constitution, that is a number up on the elections that were held earlier this year. So far, voting has been relatively peaceful with high security being imposed on this historic day to encourage people to come out and vote.

A ban on driving was put in place along with a lock down as all borders both provincial and national to secure the nation for this historic today. With the vote only three hours away from closing security looks to have been successful with only a couple of isolated incidents. Earlier this year on election day over 300 incidents of violence was recorded.
Polls opened at 7 a.m. (0400 GMT) and were due to close at 5 p.m. More than 15 million people are registered to vote.
If the constitution is accepted then an election will take place in December this year for a five
-year permanent government, many say that this will bring stability to the country.
