A 6 hour meeting of the Turkish National Security Council (MGK) took place yesterday in Ankara, under the direction of President Ahmet Necdet Sezer. At the top of the agenda was Iran, whose announcement that it had begun enriching uranium for nuclear power has caused international concern over the last month. The MGK reportedly discussed scenarios that could conceivably developed if the Iran matter develops into an international crisis, and what Turkey's stance would be in the matter.

Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul also briefed the MGK on dialogues he had had with Iranian Foreign Minister Monachehr Muttaki concerning Iran's resistance to working with the International Atomic Energy Association (UAEA), and the plan to transfer the matter to the United Nation's Security Council in the event of non-compliance from Iran.

The MGK was also briefed on last week's visit to Ankara by a Hamas delegation led by Hamas leader Halit Meshaad. Gul reportedly stressed to council members that "We explained the firm expectations of the international community to Hamas."
