President of the International Press Institute, IPI, has written a letter to Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan condemning a law that still exists in the Turkish penal code limiting the freedom of the press. In the letter he is quoted as saying, “A country that wishes to join the European Union cannot have these kinds of laws. No reporter should bear the stigma of being guilty just for expressing his ideas.” It was also noted that there were 23 sections in the new Turkish Penal Code (TCK) that threatens the freedom of the press. The letter touches home with Hurriyet whose correspondants Toygun Atilla and Çetin Aydin have had problems with the law recently.
