The security forces has taken extraordinary measures after an attack on a police post and a foiled bomb attack in the eastern province of Tunceli where Turkish Prime Minister pays a visit Saturday. (UPDATED)

Clashes erupted overnight between security forces and a group of terrorists who tried to infiltrate into the city center from the surrounding mountains.

The clashes had lasted three hours and followed by a search in mountainous area to capture the terrorists, news agencies reported.

In the city center of Tunceli a suspicious package was discovered in front of the office building of Turk Telekom. The package was detonated by the security forces who defused the bomb inside.

The security officials had tightened the security measures for the visit Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan who attends his Justice and Development Party's (AKP) meeting in the province.

The television channels reported the instruments used to jam the signals of the mobile phones, shutting down the GSM network temporarily.

Tunceli is the city where AKP has the weakest support in Turkey. It is the only province that the ruling party failed to win a representative in the parliament in the elections held in 2002 and 2007.

Tunceli is seen as one of the most modern cities in Turkey with its overwhelming population of Alevis, a liberal wing of Islam. However some bases of the PKK terrorists are located in the surrounding mountains of the city.
