During an October 5th phone conversation, Prime Minister Erdoğan told President Bush that a bill being debated by Congress that would define the events of 1915 as genocide would, if passed into law, do great damage to US-Turkey relations.

Gordon Johndroe, a spokesperson for the White House, told reporters that Bush expressed his own reservations about the bill, and said that his administration was working to ensure that it does not become law.
The president, Johndroe added, said that historians, not congressional members, should decide whether the events of 1915 constitute genocide.
