The government decided on Thursday to delay the implementation of the new Turkish Penal Code (TCK), the code of criminal procedure (CMK), the law on execution of punishments and the law of offences until June 1st, 2005.The code will now be implemented as of June 1st, pending approval although it is actually scheduled to take effect on April 1st. Parliament is expected to vote on the delay later today (Thursday). Sources said if the mentioned laws take effect, there would be a gap in implementation of the law on fight against smuggling and the law on protection of Turkish lira. Therefore government officials have decided to postpone the implementation of the new penal laws until June 1st, 2005 in order to overcome the difficulties.
