Turkish Imams planning to work in Germany are taking lessons from a Catholic Priest about dealing with the locals.

According to an agreement between the Department of Religious Affairs and the German Embassy in Ankara, Turkish Imams going to Germany have been getting lessons from Priest Felix Körner at the Catholic Church in Ulus, Ankara.

Körner said the idea originated with the German Embassy, and was warmly welcomed by the Department of Religious Affairs. Pointing out that many Imams posted to Germany often went without any knowledge of the German language, and lived in ghettos, Körner said it was disturbing for some within the Department of Religious Affairs who are pushing for change.

Körner’s program consists of 300 hours of lessons, during which Imams are taught not only the German language, but also about German law and customs. The priest said he asks his Imam students, “How would the famous Muslim philosopher, Rumi, tell Muslims and Christians to behave if he lived in Germany?”
