Turkish cargo ship detained in Abkhazia

A Turkish cargo ship was detained by Georgian coastguards as it prepared to dock in the breakaway region of Abkhazia against a Georgian ban on docking there, officials said on Monday. Chief coastguard Koba Bochorishvili said that, the Tari Guner was detained outside the port of Sukhumi on Sunday, and was escorted with its eight passengers to the port of Poti which is under control of Georgia's central authorities in Tiblisi. Bochorishvili added that, "When the stop signal was issued the Vessel tried to change course and leave in the direction of the Russian port of Sochi."

Turkish cargo ship blazes out of control

According to the Anatolian News Agency, a Turkish dry cargo vessel caught fire 100 km from the Black sea coastal town of Trabzon on Thursday. Fifty-three people on board had abandoned ship. The vessel was heading towards the Russian port of Sochi. The Turkish emergency coordination centre in Ankara sent two coastguard vessels and a helipcopter to the scene on Thursday evening. All crew members and passengers were safely taken to Trabzon, however, the fire was still not under control.

ISTANBUL - Pirates have hijacked another Turkish cargo ship in the Gulf of Aden, a global maritime watchdog said yesterday. The Turkish cargo ship "M/V Boğaziçi Harikası" was hijacked Tuesday in the Gulf of Aden by a gang of pirates who fired automatic weapons from two speed boats, said an AFP report yesterday. The ship belongs to the Isko Denizcilik company in Istanbul.
