’Civilian oversight over security forces is weaker’
ISTANBUL - ’Almanac Turkey 2006-2008: Security Sector and Democratic Oversight’ focuses on information about the security sector as a whole in Turkey and aims to accumulate information for civilian surveillance of the sector. Funded partially by the European Commission, the almanac includes an extensive scan of documents and legislation.

Turk banks’ profit rally to slow down
ISTANBUL - As the Central Bank hints that the latest interest rate cut in June may be the last one, banking sector’s profitability may be negatively impacted. With 5 billion liras in profits in the first quarter, banks are expected to obtain less revenue from Treasury securities they hold in the second quarter.

Contrary to the prime minister’s optimism, the official statistics from the first quarter of the year are in. Turkey’s GDP slid almost 14 percent, the biggest quarterly slump in at least 60 years, a number dwarfing the government’s official forecast of a 3.6 percent contraction this year.
