An article published on the website www.guerrillanews.com claims that; "173 violations of World Bank environmental and social standards in the Turkish section of the Baku-Ceyhan pipeline project were made during the design stage alone". It is also stated that "the Kurdish Human Rights Project have filed cases in the European Court of Human Rights on behalf of 38 affected villagers along the route, alleging multiple violations of the European Convention on Human Rights including: the illegal use of land without payment of compensation or expropriation, underpayment for land, intimidation, lack of public consultation, involuntary resettlement and damage to land and property."The project is governed directly by an Inter-Governmental Agreement (IGA) which exists between the governments of Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey - the agreement was drafted by British Petroleum's (BP's) lawyers - the largest investor in the project - so the writer states. The article also says that the pipeline legal agreement also give BP governing power over a strip of land 1,750 miles long, where the company will likely override all national environmental, social, and human rights laws for the next 40 years. The article heavily criticizes BP for using it's political might to profit from projects that are not carried out as the public perceive them to be. The writer addresses the subject of the BP new image with a "vibrant yellow and green starburst logo". The Baku - Ceyhan pipeline is used as an example of this misperception. Â
