ISTANBUL - The Turkish captain and chief engineer of a ship that was attacked by pirates in Nigeria this week have been freed, Turkish media reported on Thursday.

The two men -- Sinan Taskiran and Salim Atilla Sengun -- were released "safe and sound" without any ransom being paid, a lawyer for Istanbul-based MRC Shipping, which operated the ship, told the newspaper Sabah.

Pirates attacked the Aleyna Mercan ship late Monday about 50 nautical miles off Onne port, near the oil city of Port Harcourt. The supply vessel was delivering equipment to French oil group Total.

The attackers seized the crew's valuables and took its captain and chief engineer hostage. The ships 13 other crew members were not taken hostage.
