Following claims of harassment and rape, two girls from the Barbaros Children's Village in Urla, Izmir, who were forced against their will to endure examinations to check their virginity, have committed suicide. The two girls aged 17 and 15 years old, decided to take their own lives by cutting their wrists. Both girls had made previous attempts on their lives in a similar manner in the days preceding the fatal suicide and had received treatment. One of the girls had claimed to be in love with a boy and because she wanted to marry him had requested that she not be checked for her virginity. Regarding the suicides the Izmir province social services director stated, “An event occurred as the result of an argument between two friends. There is no danger and it is not an event that is getting bigger. They did it in order to attract attention. We are giving therapy to the other children.”
