    Turks: Architects of an Empire and Genius of Sinan The Great Architect" exhibition opened in London

    The ''Turks: Architects of an Empire and Genius of Sinan the Great Architect'' exhibition was opened in London's Shapero Gallery on Tuesday. The exhibition is composed of 35 photographs of works of Sinan the Great Architect, which were taken by leading Turkish photographer Ahmet Ertug.

    Ertug said that he aimed to drew the attention of British public to the fact that Turkey  could make cultural contributions to the EU.

    The Great Architect Sinan was born in Anatolia in 1489. Drafted as a soldier into the Ottoman royal house in 1512, he quickly advanced from cavalry officer to construction officer. As construction officer he built bridges and fortifications. In 1538 he was ppointed Architect of the Abode of Felicity. During his career Sinan built hundreds of buildings including mosques, palaces, harems, chapels, tombs, schools, almshouses, madrassahs, granaries, fountains, aqueducts and hospitals. Of this diverse group of works, his mosques have been most influential. Generally considered the greatest of all Ottoman architects, Sinan's career spanned fifty years. His great mosques are the archetypal image of Turkish Ottoman architecture. Sinan died in Istanbul in 1588.
