"Turkish Year" to be celebrated in France in 2007

French governmental authorities have announced that, following the upcoming "Armenian Year" to be recognized in France between April and November, a so-called "Turkish Year" will be scheduled for 2007. Following a meeting yesterday between Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul and French Foreign Minister Philippe Douste-Blazy during which Douste-Blazy mentioned the "Turkish Year" plans, the French FM then answered questions at a press conference about the Armenian genocide.

Said Douste-Blazy, "Accordance and cooperation lie at the foundation of the EU. It is time for us to look with an open heart towards the future. These types of subjects are for the society as much as they are for historians. France has noted Turkey's efforts on this subject. We support the ongoing discussion of this subject among the Turkish people. Clearly, the bill which passed in France in 2001 makess clear this society's sensitivities with regards to the tragedy that occured in 1915."
