Turkish President Ahmet Sezer vetoed the student amnesty law, which pardoned some 240,000 students that were kicked out of school on academic or disciplinary grounds after June 2000, said a spokesperson from the president's press office yesterday. Sezer's office said that the three-fifth majority necessary for such a law to come into effect had not been reached in the 550-seat parliament. The law has been returned to parliament by the president. Even if the students are pardoned, those who continue to wear the headscarf, seen by some as a symbol of anti-secularism, can not return to university. The bill was drawn up by the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), and is seen as a "populist measure" by many critics. AKP deny any Islamic bias regarding the bill, and are still forging ahead with aspirations of EU membership.
