ISTANBUL - Photographer Mehmet Demirci is the only Turkish participant in the PooL Art Fair, an independent event held in New York. Among other work, Demirci is presenting photos taken during Obama’s presidential campaign

Photojournalist Mehmet Demirci will represent Turkey this month at an independent art event in New York, where an exhibition of his work, titled "The World I Have Seen," will be on display.

The only Turkish participant in the 6th annual PooL Art Fair, which will be held in New York from March 6 to 8, Demirci will show photographs taken during the presidential campaign of Barack Obama, as well as those shot in the various countries where he has worked so far, including Bosnia, Cyprus, Greece, India, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Pakistan, Palestine, Sudan and Turkey.

"Since early childhood, I have contemplated the ever-changing nature of all things," said Demirci, who describes himself as a documentary photographer. "The desire to see a person, thing or place as it is at a specific and finite moment Ğ even the light of a specific moment is never the same the next instant Ğ led me to my medium, photography."

Making himself understood

Demirci said that his main goal was to tell people something by sharing his photographs with them, adding that New York was a magnificent city in which to make himself understood. "You can get an answer for what you say immediately," he said. "It is extremely sensitive. I am happiest when I am walking around without a care, my camera in hand and capturing an instant, a movement and a light."

This year’s PooL Art Fair is organized around the theme "Me Me Me." Focusing largely on artists who do not have representation in art galleries, the fair’s goal is to create a meeting ground for artists, art dealers, curators and buyers. PooL has served as a launch pad for many artists in New York and Miami and its simple, modest approach offers an attractive alternative to the typical "art fair" experience for dealers and collectors, as well as the general public.

Organized twice a year in New York, PooL is held concurrently with other major art fairs, including the Armory Show and the Scope, Pulse and Bridge Art Fairs, and is one of the most prestigious art events in the city. After two successful years at the historical Hotel Chelsea, PooL will be held for the first time at the Wyndham Garden Hotel in Chelsea this year.

Each artist, or small group of artists, will have a hotel room to use as an exhibition space. The hotel has set aside two or three consecutive floors just for the PooL artists so visitors can more easily see their work. There is also a 32-inch plasma screen in each room, plus three in the lobby, promising a solid presence of new-media art at this year’s show.

The fair is being curated by acclaimed New York-based curator David Gibson, who will present around 20 artists under the umbrella of Article Projects, his curatorial enterprise.
