Turkish athlete Ayhan's doping ban reduced: report

    30.05.2008 - 16:49 | Son Güncelleme:

Turkey's former 1500m European champion Sureyya Ayhan has had a life ban for using banned substances reduced to four years on Friday, the Anatolia news agency reported.

It was not immediately known what mitigating circumstances Turkey's sports arbitration committee, a body attached to the government, considered when it made the decision.

The Turkish Athletics Federation had banned Ayhan, 29, for life in January after she was caught doping for a second time in her career.

She tested positive for the anabolic steroids methandienone and stanozolol at an out-of-competition test in September in the United States where she was training for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

She has denied knowingly taking the substances.

Ayhan’s first breach was in 2004 when the International Association of Athletics Federations said in a report she tried to submit someone else’s urine sample in a doping test while training in Germany ahead of the Athens Olympics.

Ayhan, who won the 1500m European title in Munich in 2002 and the silver medal in the 2003 World Championships, has not run a single race since her first ban ended in late 2006.
