Turkey's Social Democrat People's Party (SHP) leader announced Friday he would run under the banner of the country's main opposition CHP as the candidate for mayor to the capital city, Ankara in the upcoming bi-elections. (UPDATED)

SHP leader, Murat Karayalcin told in an interview with CNNTurk that he would run as the candidate for Anakra mayor representing the country's main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP).

He had met CHP leader Deniz Baykal regarding the issue earlier this week, signaling his candidacy for Ankara.

Karayalcin, a former foreign minister and CHP member, was mayor of Ankara from 1989-1993. Melih Gokcek from the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) has held the post of mayor of the capital city since 1994.

Karayalcin lost twice against Gokcek in the 1999 and 2004 Ankara elections.
