Turkey and the United States are the world's largest producers of boron, with Turkey holding almost 72 percent of the world's boron potential and estimated reserves of just over 3 billion tons.
Turkey increased its boron exports although it was a tough year due to the global economic crisis, said Orhan Yilmaz, director-general of Eti Mine Works, Turkey's boron processor.
Turkey exported around $405 million of boron in 2007. Yilmaz said the export target for 2009 was set at $650 million, and is targeted to reach $1 billion by 2012.
Turkey transports the majority of its boron exports to Europe, Far East countries and the United States.
