Turkey: I Have 2 Conditions to Take Payment In Loizidiou Case

Turkey stated her intention to pay compensation decided by the European Court for Human Rights (ECHR) in the case of the Greek Cypriot Titina Loizidiou, however she also stated, “I will pay, but I have two conditions.” These conditions can be summarized as follows: This decision should not constitute a precedent for similar cases. This payment should not mean that Turkey recognized Greek Cyprus. The Secretariat General of the Council of Europe reportedly viewed this statement of Turkey as reasonable. However some members of the Council had problems with the language of the statement and expressions used.In spite of the decision of ECHR, Ankara had refused to pay the compensation of 640 thousand dollars to Loizidiou, who brought a suit on grounds that she could not go to his home in Girne city in the North of Cyprus and claim her properties. The Council of Europe warned Turkey three times, however Turkey stated that the decision of ECHR was political. Now the compensation, which was decided in 1996, became more than 900 thousand dollars when the interests were added.�
