Turkey condemned the attempted ambush of a convoy, which was carrying its ambassador through a western suburb of Bahgdad on Monday. "We strongly condemn this attack on our ambassador and his personnel and we expect that the assailants will be captured as soon as possible," the foreign ministry said in a statement, adding that, "Such attacks will not affect our determination to support the Iraqis in their efforts to build a democratic country that preserves its political unity and territorial integrity, at peace with its neighbors."
According to the statement the armed attack, which "was carried out professionally," damaged the three vehicles in the convoy but caused no injuries.
Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul spoke with ambassador Unal Cezikoz over the telephone after the incident. "Nobody was hurt," said the diplomat.
