Three suspected terrorists were killed in clashes that took place near to the town of Ovacik in eastern Tunceli, reported the Anatolian news agency. The three dead were believed to be members of the outlawed leftist Maoist Communist Party, a small terrorist group that is active in and around the Tunceli region.

Earlier this year in June, seventeen members of the group were killed in military operations. The group is suspected of being responsible for an attack three years ago on a motorcade carrying a Turkish general near the capital city of Ankara. The general escaped unharmed as the attackers missed their target.

The Maoist Communist Party is believed to have splintered from the banned Turkish Communist Party-Marxist Leninist, or TKP-ML. Tunceli is some 800 kilometers east of the capital.
