Tense reception at the presidential residence

The Republic Day celebrations at the presidential residence yesterday took place in a less than celebratory environment as the tension between President Ahmet Necdet Sezer and the government officials showed its head on many occasions.

PM Erdoğan made a quick appearance at the reception, staying for only ten minutes and leaving without an announcement.
While shaking hands with Prime Ministry Undersecretary Öner Dinçer – who had to leave his post at the academy because of plagiarism charges – President Sezer avoided eye contact.
Meanwhile, Chief of General Staff Hilmi Özkök and PM Erdoğan also avoided each other.
