ISTANBUL - In celebration of the 2009 World Astronomy Year, Istanbul’s Rahmi M. Koç Museum will open an exhibition titled "Glance at the Universe from the World."

Rahmi M. Koç Museum, Turkey’s first and only industrial museum, organized the exhibition as part of the worldwide events for the 400th anniversary of Galileo’s first sky observation.

The exhibition will display selected photos taken by the world’s largest observation telescopes such as the Hubble and Chandra, provided by the International Astronomy Union and the Turkish Astronomy Association.

The exhibition will open April 2 and continue through the end of the year in the museum’s Lengerhane building. Questions about the origins of the universe, how life began and extraterrestrial life will be explored at the exhibition.

Rahmi M. Koç Museum earlier opened Istanbul’s first public planetarium, called the Discovery Globe. The planetarium provides astronomy buffs a virtual journey through the stars, a walk on the moon and close-ups of dinosaurs.

Stars and galaxy

The 40-person capacity Discovery Globe also offers educational films about astrology, art and technology. With a special projector, visitors are able to view the night sky and have a magnificent look at the stars and the galaxy. The planetarium offers answers to questions about the solar system and its relationship to life on Earth, such as how to read the night sky for directions and seasonal changes.

The Discovery Globe covers 60 square meters, was established for educational reasons and can be visited throughout the year when the museum is open. The globe’s events are not limited to astrology. There will also be various shows for children and adults in the future.
