The strongest aftershock since the massive May 12 quake jolted China on Sunday, state seismology authorities said, causing residents in some cities to flee buildings. It killed at least one person and injured 400 others, the state media reported. (UPDATED)

A strong aftershock jolted southwest China on Sunday killing at least one person and injuring 400 others, state media said, nearly a fortnight after an earthquake killed tens of thousands in the same area.

More than 70,000 houses toppled during Sunday's tremor in Sichuan province, state television reported.

A local official in Guangyuan county said one person was killed and 24 hurt in collapsed houses or landslides, Xinhua state news agency reported.

An official at the bureau told AFP it was the strongest of more than 8,000 aftershocks detected since the 8.0 quake on the Richter scale struck nearly two weeks ago.

Xinhua put the magnitude at 6.4, citing the Sichuan Earthquake Bureau, as the US Geological Survey said Sunday’s quake was measured at 5.8 magnitudes, saying it hit at 4:21 pm (0821 GMT).

The aftershock was centered in Qingchuan county, about 250 kilometers (155 miles) northeast of Chengdu.

There were no immediate reports in China’s state media of damage or casualties.

"Houses started to shake and everybody went out into the street. We were thinking (the May 12 earthquake) was behind us but it is continuing," said Chengdu resident Lou Taiyi.

However, residents soon began filtering back inside soon after the quake, with many taking it in stride. "I am not afraid. We are getting used to it," a young woman, walking down a Chengdu street with two female friends, told AFP.

The aftershock was one of dozens to shake the region after the May 12 quake struck north of Chengdu, killing at least 62,600 people and leaving another 23,700 missing.
