At a meeting of the Labor Party in England, Foreign Minister Jack Straw warned of the "great betrayal" to Turkey that would be the result of the EU shutting the door in Ankara's face. Straw also stressed that the start of the EU accession talks with Turkey was the greatest priority facing England, which is currently the term leader of the EU. Said Straw, "If we turn our backs on Turkey during this critical period, it will be not only a betrayal of the hopes and expectations of the Turkish people, but of the reform programs implemented by Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan."
