Speaker of the Turkish Parliament (TBMM), Bulent Arinc, has said that his words about the formation of a joint Turkish-Armenian commission on the so-called Armenian genocide may have been misunderstood the other day at a press conference. Arinc, who yesterday hosted an EU delegation from the French Senate, responded to reporters' questions at a press conference, confirming that there was a conflict in fact between what he had said in Manisa two days ago, and what the Foreign Ministry in Ankara was reporting on the matter.

Said Arinc, "A few lines from a very long speech can sometimes open the path to misunderstanding. I was speaking about what approach our parliament was taking to dealing with the accusations of the Armenian genocide. I did not say that there would be a joint commission formed immediately tomorrow, or that a decision had even been made on it. But when I read the headlines in the morning, reported after someone had not listened carefully to my speech from start to finish, I got excited too."
