Adem Agbektas, who was sentenced to 7.5 years of prison on grounds of setting fire at the Madimak Hotel in Sivas and causing the death of 37 innocent people, is now living in Germany. Agbektas, who is working as an imam at a mosque of the National View organization in Badenwurtenberg at the moment, denied his connection with the Madimak fire.

He said  “Events in Sivas were very grave, but the sentence given to me was very heavy because of the external factors and pressure of media.”

5 of his friends, who acted together with him in Sivas, are in Germany too. Four of them are waiting for the outcome of their application of refuge to Germany, while another one is imprisoned for deportation.

On July 2, 1993, a mob of fundamentalists burned 37 intellectuals to death in their hotel in Central-Anatolian city Sivas.
