Results from the meeting of civilizations which occured on October 3 in Luxembourg have already started to roll in. German Prime Minister Gerhard Schroeder has announced plans to visit Istanbul for the day on October 12, meeting and sharing an "iftar" meal with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The iftar meal marks the end of a day of Ramazan fasting. Schroeder's meal with Erdogan will be the first time a Christian EU leader has shared an iftar with a Turkish prime minister.

Schroeder's upcoming visit to Turkey is also meant to send a signal to other EU leaders about the strong level of support for Turkish EU talks from the German government. Schroeder apparently told Erdogan of his plans to come to Turkey early on Monday, October 3, in the hours before it became clear the Turkish delegation would leave for Luxembourg.

According to plans, Schroeder will participate along with Erdogan at a meeting at the Justice and Development (AKP) Istanbul headquarters before iftar on Wednesday. The two will then go on to the iftar dinner hosted by the AKP at their headquarters. Schroeder is expected to thank Erdogan for the support shown to him in the recent German elections, as well as to express his own continuing support for the Turkish quest for EU membership.
