"U.S. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld did not consider arriving in Ankara instead of Incirlik and talk with Turkish offfcials, and then fly to Incırlık. He departed Turkey without saying hello to any body.
" Rumsfeld toured United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Iraq last week, as a gesture of victory and thanks to the countries for their contribution to the Iraq War. After a brief visit to Kabul on board of a cargo plane, Rumsfeld arrived in Incirlik base Friday. After staying one hour here, he departed on board a Boeing 757 to London.
" That the U.S. Defense Secretary refrained from any contact with Turkish offcials during his visit to Turkey, can be regarded as an meaningful indication of the chilly relations between U.S. and Turkey at the moment. .. It seems that, at a phase when the future of Iraq is re-shaped, Pentagon does not feel the need to consult Turkey at high level. Similarly, it does not bother to make a gesture of close relations, which would improve Turkey's profile. This shows that the anger of Pentagon to Turkey for turning down the Permit for U.S. troops in Turkey on March 1, is still there.
" Turkey whose door was knocked almost each day by the Pentagon has now fallen into the position of a plane-shifting terminal. ..Now it is Ankara which has to plead, on issues related to Iraq. ..However, U.S. has no other option that keeping the sole democratic and secularism model in this region, strong."
