Romanian PM backs Turkeys EU membership

Romanian Prime Minister Calin Tariceanu expressed his support for Turkey's EU membership bid while visiting the Turkish capital, Ankara, on Wednesday. Tariceanu also voiced his support for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for Turkey. Following a meeting with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said, "We believe Turkey will be successful in the accession negotiations with the European Union."

"We are ready to share with Turkey the experience that we have gained in our own negotiations," he said. "Believe me, this process is not easy, but as we keep in mind the interests of our countries, we will step up our efforts." Turkey started accession talks with the EU in October, but it is unlikely to be ready for membership for about a decade.

Erdogan said that during their talks, Tariceanu also pledged to support Turkey's campaign for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council in 2009-10, its first-ever bid for membership in the body
