ISTANBUL - Around 15 prison inmates set fire to the roof of a prison yesterday in Turkey's southeastern province of Siirt and caused an uprising, the Doğan news agency reported.

The cause of the uprising is still unknown, the agency said, adding that security measures around the prison have been increased.

The Anatolia news agency reported that the inmates who started the uprising were convicted of theft. While they set fire to the roof, they were shouting, "We want democracy. We don’t want pressure," according to the agency.

Several ambulances and fire engines were sent to the prison, the Doğan news agency reported.
