Robert Livingston, former head of the powerful US House Appropriations Committee, and now leader of the Livingston Group, which lobbies on the part of the Turkish Republic in Washington, DC, has announced that he is cutting all ties between his group and the Washington-based think tank, "Center for Security." The president and CEO of the "Center for Security," Frank Gaffney, recently had an opinion piece published in the Washington Times in which he accused Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan of taking Turkey in an "Islamo-fascist" direction. The article also noteably asserted that it was on this basis that the EU should deny membership to Turkey. An article carried recently in the Hurriyet pointed to Livingston's membership on the board of the Center for Security's planning committee. Following this article, Livingston confirmed that he was in fact a member, but that on reading the article, he had submitted his resignation effective immediately to the Center for Security. Said Livingston, "I tried to change this group's wrong judgement of the US's important ally, Turkey, but I was not successful. I have faxed in my resignation, as well as telling the group in person."  PM Erdogan criticized the Times article as being "outside the realm of reason."
