Speaking last night on a television program hosted by reporter Mehmet Ali Birand, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan referred to the recent increase in "street protests" by PKK backed groups, saying "For the past 5 years there has been peace. But things have started to heat up again. If you'll notice, this occurs just as we enter into talks with the EU." PM Erdogan noted that if tension continues on the same note, security forces will be stepped up in concert with the level of threat. One flag, one people PM Erdogan spoke about Kurdish citizens living as Turkish citizens in Turkey, noting "We will continue, as I said in Diyarbakir, to live as one, and under one flag, without ever dividing this geography. Those who do not share this theme with us continue as they know in their own direction."  The PM also underlined that the Turkish security forces would not hesitate to respond to terror threats from within, saying "We will continue to adjust the dose of security presence in accordance with protests and incidents on the street....When citizens can say 'Our police and soldiers are maintaining our security,' they relax. I have no worries here."  Intent of PKK to provoke The PM ended by warning Turkish citizens not to rise to provocations, as well as issuing a warning to political leaders in Turkey not to flame the fires of nationalism: "From hereonin, I am asking our people to be sensitive and tolerant on the subject of provocation. And at this point, I would like to note that some political leaders are making statements with the express intent of getting people to pour into the streets in anger. This is a very ugly and dangerous tactic."
