Noting that he expected that the ruling AKP Party would stay in power for awhile more to see through the EU accession talks, Pamuk said "All circles in Turkey will begin to embrace European thinking. Even Turkish radicals will shy away from risking devaluation of the Turkish lira or the dropping of the Turkish stock markets."
In his interview in the Zeitung newspaper, Pamuk described how he watched the news unfold on October 2, in the hours before it became completely clear that the Turkish delegation would go to Luxembourg for EU talks:
"I had told all of my friends not to worry, that the decision would be a positive one. But I was nervous and excited, and checked the news every half an hour to see what was happening. At one point, I lost faith. I had the feeling that Vienna would once again be a city which would determine the fate of the Turks. But in the end, everything came out well."
