Despite the negative chord struck by her party's leader regarding the start to Turkey's EU accession talks, Istanbul's Republican People's (CHP) Party MP, Zeynep Damla Gurel, is voicing her support for the process loud and clear. While main opposition CHP leader Deniz Baykal has said "no one can make me pleased about the talks," MP Gurel wrote an article published in yesterday's Radikal newspaper expressing support for the process Turkey has undertaken with the October 3 start to the accession talks.

Gurel spoke in her article about the crossroads she perceives Turkey to be at: "October 3 is the starting point for a future in which nothing is going to be as it used to be in the past. It is perhaps the most significant crossroads in the history of the Turkish Republic. As members of CHP, much responsibility falls on us...."
Most important decision made by Europe in 50 years
Gurel also spoke about how she thought the decision to start the talks with Turkey had resonated across Europe: "....This is perhaps one of the most important decisions made by Europe in the last 50 years, in fact it may well be the most important decision made in the last 50 years..." Gurel also used her article to call on CHP members to shoulder an active role in the accession process, and to help in the reform process vital to securing success in the talks.
Gurel says her view does not contradict Baykal's
Speaking to Hurriyet about her article in Radikal, Gurel underlined that while there was no difference in point of view with CHP leader Baykal, that many of the MPs in her CHP party felt as she did on the subject. She also stressed that CHP reaction following the start to the talks was not with the decision itself, but with the conditions under which the framework document for the talks were accepted, a criticism she said she shared with Baykal
